The sinking of the Sewol ferry occurred on the morning of April 16th, 2014 on the way from Incheon to Jeju. The ferry capsized while carrying 476 people, mostly high school students from Danwon High School, a school that is located in a countryside of South Korea called Ansan. There are two main reasons of causation. One, the ship had not been repaired for a significant time. And two, the ship carried too much cargo over the designated amount. Once the ship collapsed, the captain of the ship was the first to leave, without giving any directions to the crew and passengers on board. As a result, a total of 304 passengers died in the disaster. Of the approximately 172 survivors, many were rescued by fishing boats and other commercial vessels that arrived at the scene before the Navy. As of November 14, 2014, the search for any remaining passengers came to a halt. Following this tragic incident, a massive activism movement arose in many parts of South Korea.
The sinking of the Sewol has resulted in widespread social and political reaction within South Korea. Many criticize the actions of the captain and most of the crew of the ferry. Additional criticism has been directed at the South Korean government and media for its disaster response and attempts to downplay government culpability. Parents and citizens all over the nation was very upset, and started an activism movement that sought to bring about change in the rescue system so that such tragedies would not repeat in the future. A yellow ribbon symbolizes the movement, and Korean citizens all over the world showed consolidation of the incident by posting pictures of the yellow ribbon on various types of social media.
